Basic Switchmen
My greatest impact at Mosaic was working on a 10-day instructor-led training for substation switching. The course was designed as a culminating course for the electrician apprenticeship and as a certification course for transitional employees. At the needs analysis, the stakeholders and I decided to create a course that was more student-centered, activity-based, and hands-on in the name of safety and practical application on the job. The course included problem-solving activities to practice critical thinking while switching and scenario-based activities with equipment. I used backwards design so each module (lessons, activities) built upon one another, finally leading up to the assessments. The course included a Facilitator Guide, Participant Guide, Skill Assessment, Performance Assessment, and supplementary materials (maps, switching logs, quick reference guides, job-aids). In addition to this course, I developed a supplementary 3-day emergency switching course for electricians who have years of experience in the field.
